Speaker: Hilary Richie, Addenbrooke’s Archives

3rd May
I am the Archivist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and have been in post for 13 years.  This
is my second professional post; I previously worked in the Suffolk Record Office.  Prior
to training as an Archivist I was in the RAF for 17 enjoyable years.  During that time I
had many postings including the Falklands Islands and The Ascension Island.
I gave my talk on ‘The History at Addenbrooke’s.’
I began by explaining how the Hospital came to be from the early 18th century, then
onto the nineteenth century, with the development of the hospital and the influence of
Florence Nightingale.
Then into the 20th century and the beginnings of a hospital as we would expect today;
the building of the Hospital on Hills Road and then brought things up to date with a
little about the happenings of the hospital today.  I  illustrated the talk with images
from the collection held in the Archives.
